What to Bring to your Appointment
If you are filing a joint return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.
Identification and personal information
- Photo Identification: A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, for you and your spouse (if filing a joint return).
- Social Security Cards: The original Social Security cards or ITIN documentation for everyone listed on your tax return. This includes yourself, your spouse, and any dependents.
- Birth dates: The dates of birth for everyone on your tax return.
- Bank Account Information: Your bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit of any refund.
Income documents
- Wage and Income Statements:
- W-2s: From all employers.
- 1099 Forms: Such as 1099-G (unemployment benefits, state refunds), 1099-R (pension or retirement distributions), 1099-INT (interest), and 1099-DIV (dividends),
- SSA-1099: For Social Security benefits.
- Self-Employment and Gig Work:
- 1099-NEC and 1099-K: Income forms from clients or online platforms.
- Records of income: Any income not reported on a 1099.
- Expense records: A categorized list of business expenses and business mileage.
- Other Income: Records for any other income, such as prizes or gambling winnings (Form W-2G).
Documents for credits and deductions
- Last Year's Tax Return: A copy of your prior-year federal and state returns, if available.
- Health Insurance: Form 1095-A from the Health Insurance Marketplace, if you had coverage through it.
- Education Expenses: Forms 1098-T (tuition statements) and 1098-E (student loan interest).
- Childcare Expenses: Records of your total payments to a provider, along with their name, address, and tax identification number (SSN or EIN).
- Home ownership: Form 1098 for mortgage interest and records of property taxes paid.
- Itemized Deductions: Receipts for charitable contributions and other deductible expenses.
Other important documents
- Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN): If the IRS has issued you one, bring the letter containing your IP PIN.
- IRS Letters: Any letters or notices received from the IRS or state tax agency.
